Fairweather Lodge Program Wins Outcomes Award at Coalition for Community Living Conference
Each year the Dorothy Berger Outcomes Award is given out at the annual Coalition for Community Living Conference. This specific award is given to the Lodge Program that has instated an innovative new facet to their program. We are proud to announce that San Antonio Family Endeavors was the winner of this award for the Exercise Program that was put in place by Christine Ivey, Program Manager.
By starting out slow, working out twice a week as a group, Christine was able to gain the acceptance by the lodge members on the importance of exercise for a healthy life. For the first 45 days those that participated each time the group met they were able to go out to lunch with both Christine and Danielle Stevens the Program Director, for a lesson on healthy eating when eating out at Chili’s.
Christine worked diligently to find a gym near the lodges that offered a company package that they would extend to the lodge members if enough people signed up, and they did, for $10 a month they are able to have a gym membership allowing access to ellipticals, treadmills, weights, etc.
While doing this there was an emphasis placed on the need for healthy eating to go hand in hand with the exercise. Lodge members are learning how to eat/cook low fat and low calorie meals that they find to be delicious.
Overall Results: Many of the lodge members, and even staff, learned how to eat correctly and learned the importance of physical exercise. Two out of every three clients lost unwanted pounds. A number of lodge members that were borderline pre-diabetic have completely turned their lives around and no longer have to worry about when diabetes is going to strike. The Lodge Members Doctors are amazed and impressed with the success that they have been able to achieve.
